One of the things we tend to look for when we travel is somewhere ‘exotic’. The word first came into wide spread use into 19th century, and it was used to refer to places like Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, it was about markets and harems, man with small mustaches, camels, mint tea and dunes. There tend to be some pretty random associations around the word ‘exotic’, in fact you could find almost anything exotic, depending on where you come from and what your tastes are. If you came from a land of sand and pyramids, a typical English summer’s day would be reliable to be extremely exotic.

Because I’m a shut-in, Edinburgh to me is just my room, and all I do in there is work, eat and sleep. Nothing in the world can compare to eating and sleeping, oh the joy it used to bring me. But even these leisure activities have gradually turned into a boring daily routine, possibly because eating and sleeping were in fact a daily routine to begin with, but I no longer derive pleasure from it as much as I used to. So there is now no difference between work and leisure, and I’m just getting through each day for the sake of existing, it’s a wonderful feeling.

Romania is a very eclectic country. This eclectism transcends not only in the buildings, but also in the people. On a street with some tall modern skyscrapers, you can see a very miserable house. On a street that’s loaded with expensive cars you see a beggar with a dog. A country where the old mentality is strikingly opposite to the new one. I am just drawing what I see every day on the street. Most of the times what I see is very funny, but also(sad and) philosophical. I choose to draw “human types”; they exist ofcourse everywhere, but in Romania these types suffer a slight alteration, due to the opposite directions they are pulled every day(the Sovieth Union and the Occident).

The Street.

1/First there is a type that’s called ”Pipitza”; this means a girl with a ‘unique’ taste in fashion-lots of jewelry, lots of make up (lots of pink and bling blings). A sort of J.Lo wannabe, but with a ridiculous vocabulary. She is usually shopping in malls, or peeling her nails in the bus station, or flirting with football players..

2/Compatible with ”Pipitza” is the ”Manelar” type- a guy that listens to <modern-gypsy-pop-music> ( I can’t translate what it means, but you probably have heard it). This guy listens to this awfull music in the bus, with high volume. He’s generally a gypsy( rrom, not roumanian).

3/The hysterical type is represented by the lady with the fox fur hat , slim red lips, and bitchy eyes. Make sure that you’ll give her your seat in the bus or anywhere else.

4/Ladies, be careful with this person- the depraved old man( ”Pipitzele” must pay close attention to their “behinds”. You can recognize him by his abundent drooling when he’s watching your cleavage.

5/This person is rare (!!!); when she sees a piece of garbage on the street she picks it up. I think she’s in a GREEN PEACE association , because the rest of the people simply don’t care about these things.

6/…and this person is way to common. Thank God there is a person that gatheres the garbage(not including the workers) for every 20 persons that throw it.

1/The priest, or the Pope. He’ll always have minimum five rings on his hands, and he’ll always give the old women his hand with the biggest ring to be kissed, and thus wash away their sins.

2/Here is a decent man- the intelectual-he will stop from his destination if he spots a booksale on the street, and lose himself for hours among the books.

3/ Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the charlatan congressman. A decent man at power is very rare around here..

4/The man with EVERYTHING you need - he will sale you shoes, insecticide, cookies, tampons, eyeglasses, tissues, rabbits, etc.. all in one ( very tiny) place: his jacket.

5/ A SHAORMA is never bad-especially if it’s prepared by this guy: he will take a good care of your food- he’ll put in it some ‘exquisite’ ingredients. You can guess what he puts instead of mayonaisse..

6/The Artist!… he doesn’t need further presentation-it’s enough to say that he makes only female bronz nudes.. with featheres

1/Olllld stuuuff… neeew stuuufff!!! or the guy that sales old rusted iron objects to unemployed old people. He usually has the highest, most annoying voice that sounds like thousands of broken strings…

2/ A woman that sales flowers on the street; she is very nice and kind, with that special wisdom that comes only with age.

3/This picture is very common— the workers can be seen everywhere, anytime. They spend most of their time watching hot girls( Pipitze) … but they tend to forget that they have a work to do, and a wife with 5 kids at home. Most of the workers are called “DOREL”

4/The horror of old people- the ROCKER- with long dark dirty hair, dirty t shirt with Metallica on it , killing sight- but once you get to know him you realize they are an amazing company.

5/<Don’t look at me> a.k.a the guy that steals your stuff. He’s mostly seen in the bus, wearing a HUGE coat… watch out for him..

1/The “COCALAR” ( a person that dresses very bad, bad hair cut, bad manners, mediocre, obsesed with football, obsessed with cars, women and shaorma)- he usually drives a Dacia BMW wannabe. He loves to stare and shout out to the chicks on the streets: Whatcha doin doll?? readin??

2/ The bus driver- with his lovely Cindy Crawford poster behind his chair( it could also be a towel). A man always bored by the awful trafic, but most of all bored by all the hysterical ladies on the bus..

3/Apparently, you can still blow bubbles in the park after the age of 11

4/The beggar- from Romania, has a unique way to make you laugh- he salutes his own reflection in the bus with a sincere smile ..

5/The alcoholic … with his big sheep fur hat.. inheritance from his great great grandfather ( he too an alcoholic).

6/The wise and adaptable supervisor is the hybrid dog.. for him , Romania isn’t a country in between , it’s just the place where he spends a lovely life through the streets, among other cross breed mates , and ends up hit by some rich congressmen’s car.
